Templates and the builder

Build email on a canvas, bring your own HTML, personalize it, and publish a version.

Workspace settingAvailability is controlled by your workspace. Ask your administrator about access.

Start a template

Open Email → Templates. Use a starter, select New template, or Upload HTML. Using a starter makes your own copy. The starter does not change. Then choose what to make. A campaign keeps the email with that campaign. A template is a reusable design in Your templates. To keep a campaign's email for later, open it and select Save as a template in the More menu. The first time your copy opens, it gets your brand colors and logo.

Build on the canvas

  • Components is on the left. Click a block to add it below where you are typing, or drag it onto the email. A personal field goes at the cursor.
  • The email is in the middle. Type in it, or press / for blocks.
  • Properties is on the right. Select a block to change its link, colors, size and spacing.
  • On a phone, open Components and Properties with the buttons above the email.

Select a block to Move up, Move down, Duplicate or Delete it in Properties.

Spacing in Properties sets a block's Padding and Margin, in pixels:

  • Padding is the space inside the block, between its edge and its content. It shows inside a background color or border.
  • Margin is the space outside the block, between it and the blocks around it.
  • Choose All sides to set one value, or Each side to set top, right, bottom and left separately.
  • Clear a field to go back to the email's default.

Spacing also shows when you select text: it applies to the paragraph or heading that holds the text.

Outlook for Windows does not show padding on images. Use margin for space around an image that must show in every email program. Select Save as a reusable block to keep it, for example your signature. Saved blocks appear under Saved blocks in Components for every template.

Under Brand in Components, add your logo or select Use brand colors. With nothing selected, Email style in Properties sets the page, email, text, button and link colors. All styles under it has every other setting.

Images

Select Add an image in Components, or select an image and then Replace image. Choose from the media library, or upload, paste a link, or copy from stock photos or your Google Drive. Email programs show JPG, PNG and GIF images. Describe each image for people who can't see it.

Personalize

Select Personal field (first name) in Components. It adds First name, with "there" for people without one. Properties then lets you choose another field and change the text to show when it is empty. Campaigns need that text. In the subject, use Insert field. The syntax is {{contact.first_name|default:"there"}}.

The template's name, category and tags are under Name, category and tags, above the email.

HTML templates

An uploaded template stays HTML. You edit its source, and the builder does not open it. Checks show what to fix, such as scripts, forms or images without a full https address.

Preview, test and publish

  • Preview shows desktop, phone and plain text. Preview as a contact to see their details.
  • Send a test, in the more actions menu, goes to teammates only. Its links never unsubscribe anyone.
  • Publish saves a numbered version. Campaigns and automations keep the version they were given.

Replace the sample images and example.com links before you send a campaign. You can publish with them, but a campaign can't use the template until they are gone.
